Young Girl holding candy in Calef's Candyland

“They still make these?!”, “Wow, I remember these from my childhood!”, “ I remember penny candy when it really was a penny!”, our days are filled with hearing these sayings as our customers come in to explore Candyland at Calef’s Country Store.

As you enter the doorway you are greeted with two tiers of jars and jars filled with “Penny candy”, rows of candy bars, barrels of bulk candy. Edible bugs, gourmet chocolate bars, cotton candy, and the list goes on. It is a room devoted to anything sweet and unique.

Jars of jars of candy at Calef's Candyland

What makes Calef’s candy room truly unique is that we charge by the piece. There are prices on the jar and/or the candy that say how much it is. Customers often ask “why do you not sell it by the pound!, wouldn’t that be easier?” Yes, it would be easier, but easier is not always better.

The number one reason we do not sell by the pound is because everyone sells by the pound and what is the fun in that? The second reason is many parents bring their children into Candyland for a math lesson and to learn the value of money. The jars of candy are labeled with 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent, etc you get the idea. Parents give their child a certain amount of money and from there the child needs to add and subtract until they fill up their bag with what they can purchase. They then go up to the registers and use the money to buy their bag of candy. I don’t know about you, but sounds like the perfect kind of math lesson!

All in all whatever the reason that brings you into Candyland it will bring you back to the good old days and just make you smile!
