Calef's heirloom beans, brown bread, and molasses

Beans are an important food crop here in New England. Beans are great for the soil, hearty, and generally easy to grow. Gardeners who grow beans will be rewarded with yummy beans and better soil. But if beans aren’t part of your garden plan this season, no worries, we have you covered for local beans.

Calef’s carries three varieties of Heirloom Dried Beans – Soldier, Yellow Eye, and Jacobs Cattle. All grown on Maine Farms, dried in the traditional manner and delivered to you in 2 LB bags.

These locally grown beans are rich and robust in flavor. They are also an excellent source of protein and an excellent vegetarian alternative protein.

Boston Baked Beans are also a great dish to bring to a cookout or serve alongside some summer favorites. We like to use Jacob’s cattle but all different beans will do and you may follow the traditional recipe that suits you best. Make them alongside grilled ribs, BBQ chicken, and burgers. Add a few other classic sides and you can build the perfect BBQ.
