Calef’s Country Store

Barrington, NH

Established in 1869, Calef's has been "buying local" since Ulysses S. Grant was president.

In 1869, just after the Civil War, Mary Chesley Calef mortgaged her family farm and pledged her savings to open Calef’s Store in the front rooms of her modest home in Barrington NH. Five generations of the Calef family operated Calef’s Big Store until the 1990’s, including Mary’s son Senator Austin Calef. Today the traditions endure as Calef’s Country Store serves the local community as well as visitors from afar. We still pump our own molasses and honey, cheese is aged in our cooler, and our smoked Ham is mouthwatering.

Walk through our doors today and take a step back to a simpler time, when customer service wasn’t a gimmick, but the way things were done.

The wood floors creak with stories of lore, our wood stove warms passersby, the aroma of fresh baked breads and donuts entice even the healthiest of folks.

Jar after jar of penny candy tempts young and old alike.

Our Calef’s brand old fashioned jams, jellies, pickle items, bread and soup mixes offer something for everyone.

The wooden pickle barrel is still a focal point in the store. Our Ginger Snaps are renowned for their bite.

Delicious ham. We always get our Holiday Ham from Calefs. They mail it as requested and arrives in perfect shape. The pea soup we make with leftovers is yummy!

Best ever

Every holiday season I try to seek out the best artisinal protein for our large family feast. Well after receiving our hams today and not being able to resist from sampling them, I can truly say this is by far one of the best tasting hams that I have tasted and all family members that sampled agreed. Can hardly wait for Christmas dinner. From ordering to communication and shipping, I would highly recommend a Calefs ham, O and their rattrap too.

These are the best hams period. We enjoyed them so much they became a tradition at our company as gifts to our employees at Christmas. Now that I've retired, I order them for our Christmas tradition. The cold pack keeps everything nice and chilled for the trip from NH to FL. Treat yourself, family and friends to the best ham you can buy.

Best ham ever

I started buying this ham five years ago and cannot go back to anything else. I normally take the 1 Hour drive there to pick up a ham twice a year. This time my neighbor decided to split a half of a ham so I ordered it online for the $15 coupon. It came with ice packs a day and a half later. Great service and great ham.

Once you know

I was introduced to Calef’s many years ago by my wife’s family who are from the Nelson area. It was an experience I will never forget. The cheeses and the hams are above and beyond. When possible we try to visit the store while in New England. This year we had a ham shipped to us n Savannah Georgia. It like the first ham I tried was great.
